Nineteen Eighty Something
Thurs 28th May | 8pm
An Táin Arts Centre
Nineteen Eighty Something is a wildly entertaining and visceral live performance written and performed by acclaimed theatre artist, Declan Gorman. Coming to An Táin Arts Centre on Thursday 28th May at 8pm, the show recreates a decade of global and Irish political upheaval through a deeply personal lens.
In the middle of the night in 1981, a young Irish migrant is wakened by a strange woman in a German underground station. She tells him to run, run quickly… and so begins nine years of searching for love, work, escape, and meaning.
The story hurtles from the squats and car factories of Munich and Berlin to the deserts of Morocco, finally returning to a life of fringe theatre and protest politics in Dublin. Set against a backdrop of recession, hunger strikes, and the era of Reagan and Thatcher, the performance blends video montage, movement and a pumping 80s soundtrack. High comedy is interlaced with truthful accounts of loneliness, anxiety, and recovery.
Paul Hayes, Director of An Táin Arts Centre, says “I’m delighted to welcome Declan back to An Táin to finish his tour. We supported the development of the show by offering Declan a rehearsal space so I have had a small preview, and I can assure all theatre goers and fans of the 80’s that they are in for a treat.”
